The final of YFCU’s annual tag rugby tournament, run in association with Northern Bank, took place on Saturday 1st August 2009 at Omagh Rugby Club.
In both the junior and senior competitions, Jonathan Quigley, Youth Development Officer with the IRFU (Ulster Branch), and his team drew up leagues with the team to score the most tries in each league qualifying for the final.
The action kicked off with the winners of the junior county heats taking to the pitch. Teams from Annaclone & Magherally, Seskinore, Coleraine, Moycraig, Garvagh and Spa young farmers’ clubs played against each other.
After a tough semi-final and an extremely close final which ended up going into extra time, Seskinore YFC picked up the Rosemary Cooper shield for winning the YFCU tag rugby 2009 junior title.
The senior section of the tournament was equally exciting with teams from Moycraig, Annaclone & Magherally, Spa 1, Spa 2, Seskinore, Finvoy, Garvagh and Hillhall young farmers’ clubs taking part in two leagues.
The top team from each league made it through to the final and reigning champions Annaclone & Magherally defended their title to pick up the Adrian Cooper Shield.
YFCU would like to take this opportunity to thank Northern Bank for their continued support of this YFCU event and in particular John Henning for helping out at the final. Thanks are also extended to the IRFU Ulster Rugby Community Development Officers, Jonathan Quigley, Brian O’Shaughnessy, Darren McQuigan and Palmer Eccles for all their help and support in running this popular competition.
