Cappagh A were crowned champions of the YFCU girls five-a-side football at the finals that were held at this year’s Balmoral Show.
Eight teams took part in the competition; sponsored by Johnston Gilpin & Co. Limited and all the girls on each of the teams were full of enthusiasm.
The teams in the final were determined at the YFCU Girls Five-a-Side heats that took place in two heats the Mid Ulster Sports Centre in Cookstown and CAFRE, Greenmount Campus earlier this month. At the heats, 31 participating teams took part and from these Cappagh A, Cappagh B, Seskinore , Spa, Lylehill, Glarryford, Straid and Lisnamurrican young farmers’ clubs won a place in the final.
With adrenaline rushing, the girls took to the Cattle Lawn to warm up and then battle it out for a place in the final. They played one league with each team playing each other. At the end of the league, the top two teams played against each other.
After intense games, Cappagh A and Lisnamurrican finished top of their respective leagues and played against each other in a highly contested match. The competition and rivalry between the two teams was immense and the noise from the supporters grew loud as the final got underway.
The final went to penalties with Cappagh A being crowned champions for 2009. The team was made up of Gillian Wilson, Gillian Adams, Lisa Pinkerton, Sarah Baxter and Emma Pinkerton.
The YFCU would like to extend a note of thanks to Johnston Gilpin and Co. Limited for their continued support of the event.
